Human Relationships and Business cycles

Of late, I have realised that human relationships also go through the same phases of business cycle - Upturn, Expansion, Peaking Out, Recession. The only significant difference being business cycles are recurrent where as human relationships fade away after one cycle. In most cases, the cycle period is so small that it gives a false hope to the individual to keep trying and enter into new relationships. It is when the cycle period is significantly large and you get sufficient exposure of each phase, you get enlightened about its true nature.

Like in economics, the most difficult and uncertain phases are the upturn and the recession. During upturn, you are too skeptical, apprehensive and uncertain about the what is going to happen next and hence you make every move with immense thinking and calculation. The focus here being to be impressive, make the most of the opportunities and to get into each other’s comfort zone. Obviously, it goes without saying that the experiences from previous relationships and opinion of rest of the world takes a backseat. You start convincing yourself that you should look at “half empty” glass as “half filled”. In recession, it is the same state in which we saw the world during 2008. Every damn thing is blown away and you are there picking up the bits & pieces and trying to make some sense out of everything and yet, every single time, you end up being nonsense. The realisation sinks in: ” A half empty is glass is half empty and not half filled”.

Now, coming to the other two phases - expansion and peaking out. These make you develop the belief that “life is beautiful” and “everything is permanent”. The rate of growth, output and promising results too good to consider any other thing.

The longer you endure each phase, the better enlightenment you get out of it.

Cross Cross.. Jugari Cross.. Ok Boss

After yet another forgettabble day at the office, it was an absolute delight to watch my favorite writer Poornachandra Tejaswi’s Jugari Cross in the form of a play at the marvellous stage at Ranga Shankara. Ranga Shankara for many a reasons holds a special place in my heart and watching Jugari Cross there made my day.

Friday the 15th was not so good as it started. Issues started piling up as soon as I hit the desk  and I got completely lost. Things have started going haywire in my team from past week in an attempt to hit our project milestones 2 weeks early and everyday I’m getting a more than a fair share of adrenaline rush. Thanks to my “boss” for keeping my adrenaline glands active as ever.

Punter F**ked…. It was pure bliss watching Ponting’s face today. One of the most gifted players with the worst sportsman spirit. I would give anything to see him lose every match

The new “grand old” kid on the block…

You wait five years for the call from selectors. You keep scoring runs. ?You finally get that call. You wait for six hours to bat and you get a grubber, a shooter. You then get promoted ahead of your idol Rahul Dravid in the second innings. And play a super knock. sometimes, dreams do come true. Sometimes..

Here’s introducing himself to the biggest stage of cricket… the new “grand old” kid on the block.. Cheteshwar Pujara.. What a fantabulous dream debut this chap had.  We have seen lots of cricketers making centuries on their debuts, but none of them I have seen or read about has been so impressive as this man’s.

This guy can play any shot in the book.. He can pull… He can cut.. He can play flawless straight drives.. He can defend the ball equally well.. What not!! All this not on the first day of a test match, but on the final day final session of a test where staying at the crease for half hour even for the greatest of greatest batsmen is a gigantic task, leave alone scoring runs at run a ball pace. This guy is just a treat to watch…

Just a few tests ago, we witnessed one of our other budding talent Suresh Raina get a century on his debut against the Lankans. But then, this was different class (without taking away any credits from Raina).

In making a mere 72 on his debut, he went on to post “just” the second highest score by an Indian in 4th innings on the 5th day of a test match after Abbas Ali Baig who had achieved this feat only some 35 years ago.

I call him the “grand old” kid because he has grown really old scoring runs at the domestic circuit at an unmatched consistency for the past five years, yet going unnoticed everytime. Thanks to Mr. Kris Srikkanth!!

Now that he has announced his arrival at the biggest stage, he is here to stay and that too for a long time. Way to go Pujara!! Good luck!

They just can’t let go of it.

Being one of the ardent worshipers of the game, I just can’t stop myself from thinking about it or feeling sad about it. Its really astonishing how they manage to put themselves in trouble on every single occasion when they go out of their country.

It may be all but natural for me, being an Indian to hate every single aspect about the country named Pakistan, given the state of events in the recent past. But, right now, I’m talking about a wonderful game called Cricket and an amazingly talented side Pakistan. Without any element of doubt in mind, each one of us must/should/will accept the fact Pakistan has produced world class cricketers from time immemorial. They have given the game the best pace bowlers, be it Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Aaqib Javed, Shoiab Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul or Mohammed Aamir. I have felt extremely jealous about we struggling so hard to find one such quality pacer.  Given the state of affairs in Pakistan, the everlasting political unrest, terrorism, bomb blasts and the recent floods, the last thing they would care about is grooming fast bowlers ( or in general cricketers). Yet, they manage to find atleast one or two real quality players every year.

Right from my childhood, I have had endless discussions with my childhood buddy Varun about how our Indian team would have been had the 1947 India -Pakistan partition had not happened (Inspite of knowing the fact that there are more serious concerns than Cricket between the two nations). I’ve always dreamt of seeing Sachin and Anwar open the innings… longed to see Akram, Waqar, Kumble and Saqlain rip through the opponent batting line up.Yes, we could have been the unbeatables had my dream come true, but that is a topic for a different time.

Right now, I’m deeply saddened by what Pakistan is doing to this wonderful game. They are just putting the entire cricketing fraternity in bad light and making the keen followers of the game quit. Just a few days back, when Pakistan beat England in the last test, the entire nation got united to savour this moment of success in times of extreme misery and pain. The skipper who now finds himself at the spotlight for all wrong reasons, dedicated the victory to all the flood hit people of Pakistan. It was a moment where I just couldn’t stop myself from feeling proud and happy for this team and for this game. It was so heartening to see how a game can unite people in times of pain. But yes, I did forget that, it doesn’t need much time for things to change, especially with respect to a country like Pakistan.

When a 18 year old boy, oozing with so much of talent and has just opened his eyes in international cricket, can go so far, I really don’t have much to say except that they just can’t let go of it.

Kudos to BS Life and Leisure Team

I think, by now, it is a pretty known fact that most of the the web links posted by me are from Business Standard - Life and Leisure Section. I have been completely bowled over by everything in this section -selection of topics, simplicity of language, trying to strike a cord with common man, creating social awareness.. I just love everything about it.. So far they have been doing extremely well and I just hope they continue to maintain it.

I got acquainted with BS through one of my Professors at BITS, Pilani - Mr. Prakash Singh when I was doing the course Security Analysis and Portfolio Management. He always used to tell us to start with reading Economic Times and then graduate to Business Standard for keeping ourselves updated with the stock market happenings. Little did I know then that I would become a huge fan of BS Life and Leisure Section which absolutely has nothing to do with any stock market updates.

But then, life’s like that.. you go in search of something, eventually end up finding something else more interesting.

In any case, kudos to BS Life and Leisure team for the good work.

Good old times…

After a long time, I had an eventful weekend in my what has become a lackluster boring life. Catching up with old school friends always gives a special feeling, but this time it was even more special considering my current dull state of mind. Everything about it was special, starting from the ride to Koramangala from Domlur in Varun’s car on Saturday evening to not-so delightful South Indian lunch at Kamat Buglerock today.

Random thoughts have crossed my mind over these 24 hours ranging from the most trivial and common like owning a car, getting married, visiting US to the most wierd ones like rearing cattle (specifically cows and buffaloes), studying forensic psychology, gettinh high on LSD (yes, its LSD and only LSD), meeting Amerigo Vespussi (yes, its Amerigo Vespussi) and God knows what else.

Arsenal beating Blackpool 6-0.. Amaravathi Double Egg Roll… unfulfilled desire of eating roadside Jilebi.. watching 1 full bottle of Mansion House and 2 small bottles of Blender’s Pride getting emptied.. Sallu’s Wanted Movie…Godfather Part-II.. Australia… Unraveling (or rather 4 jobless engineers trying to unravel) the biggest of biggest conspiracy theories including 9/11 attack, man’s giant leap on moon in 1969… Shyju’s omlette session (Puke session)…. also trying to prove/disprove MSD as the best Indian cricket captain, Rebel Star Ambarish as a Good actor, Martin Scorsese better than Steven Spielberg, Aamir Khan’s versatility, Swami Nithyananda’s righteousness of his noble deeds…. and what not!!

The eventful Saturday night finally ended at 4am Sunday morning, with all of us crashing on the floor in different directions.

What then followed on Sunday morning was even more pleasant. The lazy Sunday morning was welcomed by the soothing dialogues of eternal Dr. Jack Gramm in 88 minutes. Then followed Davangere Benne Dose.. By two tea… The Undertaker taking on the “Red Monster” Cane… Gia on the awesomeeee Samsung Galaxy… soapless-just-water bath… eventually ending with Kamat Buglerock.

As I was walking back home from Domlur bus stop, darkness started surrounding me as well as Bangalore (the latter for a good cause of giving water to Karnataka junta and the former for the bad cause of making me sulk again.)

This piece of writing is just an attempt to overcome my unknown sadness/frustration and for the sake of good old times.
